Club sports day

Sports Day results are now shown on our Club web site at this link:http://www.langportrunners.co.uk/sportsday2013.html

Bearing in mind that this was a new Club event with little preparation or notice I think we did very well to get a good turn out with some interesting performances! I shall be asking for age categories next year.

I cant show you any photos because I found the evening a bit busy and forgot to record any of it.

The Club web site shows all the events and results for Juniors and Seniors.

First ever Annual Sports Day

Posted this on the Clubs Facebook page tonight.

Many of our young athletes have been competing well in school athletic competitions recently and tonight many of them were able to join us for our own special sports day. Brilliant!

Langport Runners first annual Sports Day was a great success tonight. 10 different events. Competing were 18 Juniors and 16 Adults in five mixed teams and other parents came along to support, do time keeping and other jobs without whom we couldn't have managed. Hopefully Pete will be able to tidy up the results and times for every event and we will get them issued. Every winner is a new Club Champion and every winning time is for the next year at least a Club Sports Day Record!! I forgot to get any photos which is a pity with so many athletes running well and trying to achieve their best.

SASP Road Runners Coaching Course

Just posted this message on our Facebook page.  The workshop was organised by Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership.  Adrian Marriott , you may recall, helped us set up our Festival of Mile Running and is a member of the Somerset  Athletic Network.
There were club members from Crewkern, Chard and Yeovil Town and others.

I was so impressed by the Running Workshop I attended with Shaun today at Taunton School that I believe every single member of our club should try to get on the next one.Even if you don't want to coach, understanding your sport will make it more enjoyable. Adrian Marriott took the morning session. All about road and track running, increasing fitness, types of training and their effect, writing a training plan and much else. A Sports UK Coach ran the afternoon session which covered the important basics for coaching young and old of Agility,Balance and Coordination. If you cant spare a whole day then the morning is a must."

This workshop was useful for both Junior and Senior training

Junior Club Sports Day Monday July 22th at 6.30 pm

A few photos from Yeovilton 2 k Junior Race 10.07.13, covering the start,.lap two and finish

We have fixed the date of 22nd July for our first Langport Runners Sports Day.
Inspired by the dedication and enthusiasm of our Juniors  and making the most of our use of the Huish Academy 400m , 5 lane,  grass track we are organising an open competition for all our Juniors and Seniors , Vets and Super Vets.
The Monday provisional  evening  programme will commence at 6.30 pm and continue till we have finished all the events. Final details will be fixed depending on the number of entries and choice of events.

Track events will include:
100m
200m
400m
800m
1600m  ( close to 1 mile)
4 by 100m relay

Field events will include:
Long jump and Triple Jump
Javelin
Discus
Shot Put

It is our intention to set up teams, each member entering two track and one field event. Points from each competition will be added  together for the team and the results publish and recorded for Club records.
The teams may be mixed junior and seniors so as to balance up the teams for a more equal competition for all.

Our experience of the Festival of Mile running showed the popularity of the use of teams and relays.

We hope that all members will take part in a most satisfying and enjoyable important Club event.

SASP, Somerset Activity & Sports Partnership

SASP, Somerset Activity & Sports Partnership

I find it surprising ( I could put it more strongly)  that a government funded Somerset sports organisation doesn't seem to reach out to clubs like ours. I know we are all grown ups ( apart from our Juniors of course) and we should be able to find out about these things but I'm disappointed that its just by chance that I have found out that there is a big athletics meeting going on as I write. Just like the Som County Athletics championships recently our juniors deserve to be kept informed about all these opportunities to develop their sport.   We have made progress over the last year or so and will catch up I'm sure but it is very hard work!

Why do we run? Mark Rowlands.

Why do we run?

What is the value and purpose of running especially long distance running?

I've just listened to a recording of a discussion held in Bristol at the Bristol Festival of Ideas.

Its a very interesting discussion on aspects of running with questions from the audience which included some serious runners. My own two half marathons hardly register when compared to Emily Canvins recent 100 mile run. I would like to hear Emily's views on the subject or comments from anyone else reading this Blog!

Mark Rowland is a Professor of Philosophy and has written a book called "Running with the Pack".

You can hear his views on running based on his own experiences as a runner of one marathon and a lot of more general running in the context of his work as a Professor of Philosophy.

You will need half an hour or so to listen to the recording which you can hear at this link:

https://soundcloud.com/bristol-festival-of-ideas

When you get to the web site you will need to scroll down to find Mark Rowland.

or you can buy his book: "Running with the Pack"

Langport Runners Junior Club Report

Results from local 3k race.
Run in the Wild

First Girl, Holly.
Second overall and  and second Boy , Sam.
Kameron also competed and did well in 8th overall.

The recent Primary Schools Biathlon produced a good one / two for our Juniors with Dom and Will and Holly, first Girl finishing in 8th  overall.

Just taken delivery of our new Junior Club tee shirts and they look good and smart but what will our Juniors think about the colour and design. Find out next week after our Monday training session.

Following on the grant we received from the County Council recently we have ordered some £300 worth of equipment to make our training sessions more interesting and productive.

Still trying to get one or two members on UKA Coaching courses. Difficult to find relevant courses at times to suit and at reasonable locations and price. Not easy.

Started on a new flier to aid recruitment. Along the lines of "10 good reasons to Join LR Junior Athletic Club"

Here are some of them.

  • Members receive a club tee shirt with the club logo on the chest.
  • A weekly training session on a grass track in the summer and a large gymnasium in the winter , 50 weeks of the year.
  • UKA licenced coaches to give advice and support.
  • Annual club awards for a wide range of achievement at all levels.Information on local races available for Juniors.
  • Junior club Facebook page for exchange of information and publicising results.
  • Joint Senior and junior Training sessions to give full competition.
  • Support for School athletics and Cross country events.
  • Club fun runs for local Juniors.
  • Friendly competitions with other local clubs.
Thats 9, I think!

Overall report on first 6 months of 2013. Excellent spirit and team work in the Club and improving performances in local races. Great support from Parents which is vital.

3rd day of the Mile Event Festival

Last night brought our Festival to a successful close. Over £50 raised for Sport Relief!
Over the three days our best Junior times were Sam 6.00 minutes, Hannah 6.01and 18 individual miles raced all with times ranging from 6 min to 10 min.
Then in the Paarlauf Relay the best Junior  team with Holly,Sam, Hannah, Dom and William Allen got the baton round four laps in 5 min 35 sec.
For the seniors , best time set by Adrian our guest runner , was 4 min 48 sec, Richard from Chard Runners managed a very good 5 min 27sec. All on a grass track.

Good write up in today's Western Gazette with a photo of our Juniors and coaches.

I'm sure someone said we must do it all again later this summer and certainly next year!!

Mile Festival Day 2

A very wet afternoon for the Academy to get their runners out but they managed one mile and Staff joined in as well. They had also invited Hambridge Primary along and they came with four teams and ran with great enthusiasm. When I get the results and times I'll collate them all and send them on.The Huish Biathlon was also taking place at the same time and I saw
Holly,Will and Dom all doing their run in the rain and wind. Great to see it all going on. So now just praying for a dry evening tomorrow for the last Mile events with Adrian Marriott to set the pace. A team of 5 Juniors achieved 4 min35sec last night so we have to beat that? Weather forecast is for sunshine!

Face Book post on last nights event

"A sensational start to our Mile Festival. It didn't rain but it was very windy and quite cold. The running was anything but cold. 24 runners took part in two individual mile races and then followed up with a four team Paarlauf relay race .Best individual mile time was 6:00 min by Sam Ough closely followed by Hannah with 6:01 (in two separate races so neither had close competition).Other 6 min times from Kam,Will,Dom,Kane and 7 min times by Edward,Holly,William Allen,Sarah Hill,Kieran ,followed by George Ough,Erin,Neeve,Zara and Paige. In the all Junior relay team of Holly,Sam,Hannah,Dom and William Allen achieved an impressive 4 min35sec. Four teams in total. The supporters gave every one a lot of noisy encouragement! (to keep warm I think!) and the evening was a great success.
Fantastic running, congratulations to all. A big thank you for the help of parents and supporters. A special mention to Ellie Romans who had cut her hand ice skating and cant run for several weeks but came along and was a Marshal. Look for our press coverage in the local paper on Friday."

I should add here that the following parents also took part in the events which always adds a lot to the feeling of Club spirit for all including the coaches:  Steve,Alice,Margaret,Nicky,Natasha,Julian, Emma, Mel and Roxanne (who  incidently has just activated our Run Walk Group so a "big step up" for her!)

A big thank you is due to Head Coach, Pete Jones for managing the whole evening.

We collected £22 from Club Members to go to Sport Relief!

Mile Festival info

Langport Runners note to all members and friends sent by blind email.

You are all invited to come along as spectators as well as to participate in our Festival of Mile Running.

A special guest will be Adrian Marriott  who will be running with us in a mile race on Wednesday 15th in an attempt to set a record time for the Huish track.  Adrian is currently ranked number 5 by  the UKA for 2013 V40 for 10k  with 31.45 at Bristol on 5 May and UKA number 1 for 2013 for Half Marathon with  69:50 at Reading.

On Monday 13th we are starting three days of running events inspired by Dr Roger Bannister who was the first in the world to run a mile in under 4 minutes on May 6th 1954. As far as I am aware our event is the first festival of mile running in Somerset.

On Monday 13th Langport Runners Junior Club will be starting the series of challenges by running in relays and individual races over 1 mile on the Huish Academy grass track. Meeting  as usual at Huish but please arrive 10 min early at 6.20 pm  to allow time to organise the evenings events. A warm up as usual and then mile relays and mile races.  Invitations to local primary schools and running clubs have been sent  and events will be open to non club members.

On Tuesday 14th we are being joined in this series by Huish Episcopi Academy. (see previous post for programme)
On Wednesday 15th Our normal Club Session will also be at Huish Academy sports field and not at All Saints Hall which will be closed. A similar programme of mile relays and races will be open to non members.

By having the option to join with  teams of 5 runners in a Paarlauf relay we believe we will achieve a very respectable 1 mile time.

If you are nor running you will be welcome to help us with the organisation of the events on Monday and Wednesday.

For more information contact me.

Mile Festival: Post to local clubs

Langport Runners have organised a three day festival of mile running on 13,14,and 15th May at Huish Academy using their grass track.
We are trying to find a 5 “person” team who can share the running and carry a baton for four laps to beat 4 min for a mile. On May 6th 1954 Roger Bannister did it on his own so can Chard Runners get near it or beat it. You can if you wish do it solo and we will find the fastest miler on the night.
Our Junior Club are having a go on 13th , Huish Academy are organising their own races on 14th and on 15th we will be getting our seniors and guests to join in. Adrian Marriott will be running with us on the 15th. If you have a junior group they will be very welcome on the Monday 13th to join the fun. Call me for more info on 01458 259688. All welcome.

A bit of bother over the booking of the venue for our Club AGM!

Sent out this email a couple of days ago.

"We have a problem with the booking for the Langport Arms on the Sat 12th.  We have just discovered they have no record of the booking which was made last November. They can accommodate us on Friday 11 or the 18th Jan or later of course.
What is  certain is that we can not hold the AGM this Sat."

We now have a new date of Friday 25th Jan so it seems everything is back under control. Phew!
